Right, so it’s fairly clear to me from a couple of weeks of this healthy eating lark, that getting everything I need to down me each day is going to be difficult. There’s just such a lot!
One of the ways around it seems to be smoothies, also known as “put-loads-of-stuff-in-the-blender-and-hide-lots-of-evil drinks”.
For me, fruit smoothies are a proper treat, but mixed fruit and veg ones can be pretty decent too.
The ‘Daily Dozen’ checklist says that our daily needs include 3 lots of fruit, 2 lots of greens, 1 lot of cruciferous vegetables, 2 lots of other vegetables, and 1 lot of berries. Now, I could probably polish off the fruit by eating it between meals. Although I like berries (who doesn’t?), I’ve found them hard to fit in. But that still leaves 5 lots of vegetables to spread over 2 meals, which is a lot.
Swapping a smoothie for one or two of the fruit snacks (but still including the fruit in the smoothie) could be the answer. This is because it allows berries and certain vegetables to be included at the same time.
For example, I’ve just seen a ‘Blueberry Broccoli Smoothie‘ recipe that would tick off the berries, the cruciferous vegetables, and two lots of fruit. That would leave just 2 lots of greens and 2 lots of other vegetables to have over the two meals.
I can see I’m going to have to do some research here.
In the meantime, I’ll write up one smoothie I’ve already tried that definitely works.
